FaceTime Communications Inc. To Transfer FaceTime Trademark To Apple

June 9, 2010

Today I stopped to see what all the fuss was about over the new Apple iPhone 4.  (Hat tip to the Today’s FragerFactor blog post which got me curious)

There is an interesting new feature dubbed FaceTime that allows you to basically video skype between two iPhones (only works from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4)

The first thing I had to do was check out the owner of FaceTime.com.The domain is currently owned by FaceTime Communications, Inc, and has been since 1996.

My first impression was they must be delighted to be experiencing a nice spike in direct traffic due to the naming of the new iPhone feature.  Upon visiting the site I found …

As you’ve probably heard, Apple has announced that it will use “FaceTime” as the trademark for its new video calling application

Our agreement with Apple to transfer the FaceTime trademark to them comes as we are rebranding our company to better reflect our capabilities. We will be announcing a new name in the coming months.

Although It does not say that they will be transferring ownership of the domain it would seem to be very likely.

Oftentimes companies will fail to acquire the domain for a new product launch and shoot themselves in the foot.

Perhaps Apple learned from it’s prior mistake of failing to acquire iPhone.com until at least six months after launch of the first iPhone. Although the amount was not disclosed (that I am aware) the prices paid for that domain was reportedly over 7 figures.

FaceTime Roulette?

In other related news, the phenomena of Chat Roulette rears its ugly head again, as it seems someone quickly registered the domain FaceTimeRoulette.com just following Apple’s keynote announcement.

I could easily see this becoming a new iPhone App, (oh the horror 🙂 ) though I’m not sure whether it may pose as a trademark issue or not. I have a good feeling it does, so I will not be registering any FaceTime domains. I advise anyone to do their own due diligence..
