One More Reason Top Keyword Domains Are Good For Business

January 16, 2010

Here’s yet another great example of why owning a category killer domain name is worth its weight.

Free Backlinks

Have you ever been writing something on a forum or in response to a blog post and to illustrate a point you needed to use an example domain name? If so what did you do?

Odds are you typed something like example.com, widgets.com, or domain.com. You may have even used the www.

Its significant that most internet forums and chat rooms will automatically convert the text www.example.com into a hyperlink. The comments section of many CMS and blogging platforms will not only auto-convert the www link but will also convert the non-www into a hyperlink as well.

For example see the comments in the recent post on 2012.com. You’ll notice where someone dropped a reference to 3d.com that resulted in a link out to that domain.

This is super important!

go ahead and take a look at www.example.com. The first thing you notice is there is nothing there …

You have reached this web page by typing “example.com”, “example.net”, or “example.org” into your web browser.

These domain names are reserved for use in documentation and are not available for registration. See RFC 2606, Section 3.

But what else do we know about this domain? For starters it has a whopping Page Rank 8! It also has an Alexa rank under 15,000 making it in the top 1% of frequented websites.

example.com page rank

And all this for a domain with no content!

Now, example.com is the ultimate ‘example’ of course. So let’s take a look at some other top category defining keyword domains.

Widgets.com

  • Parked
  • Page Rank 4
  • Alexa Rank 1,859,879

Baseball.com

  • Parked
  • Page Rank 5
  • Alexa Rank 1,125,589

ApplePie.com

  • Parked
  • Page Rank 2
  • Alexa Rank 6,514,746

To my knowledge none of these domains has ever been developed (though I havn’t in fact taken the time to check, I’m taking it on faith as most don’t acquire developed sites only to park them.)

What does this all boil down to?

Because of the way most internet forums, chats and blog platforms work, owning a top keyword domain makes it very likely that your URL will be linked to from a littany of different websites as people randomly name drop your domain name.

All of these natural backlinks help give your domain name high Page Rank (PR) which means your site is seen by Google as an authority site.

This in turn means that when you do have developed content on your site, not only would you see additional traffic coming directly from these backlinks, but you will also have a much easier time to rank in the top of the search results for your keyword.

One final example

Compare the two domain name registrars, Domain.com and GoDaddy.com.

It’s safe to say that Domain.com has had nowhere near the marketing push that GoDaddy has. Think about it: Super Bowl commercials, GoDaddy girls (PokerStars pro Vanessa Rousso!), extensive advertising campaigns, and you get the idea. Such is the strength of the GoDaddy brand that it is largely known as the de facto domain registrar by the general public.

Yet both sites have equal page rank (read Authority). Furthermore, search the term ‘domain’ in Google and you’ll see that Domain.com is the only site to outrank GoDaddy!

To draw the obvious conclusion this is just one more important reason why smart businesses – those that ‘get it’ – have made it a part of their marketing strategy to acquire the top category keyword domain for their product or industry..
